Lagan Valley Assembly Member Paul Givan is to lead a campaign for the introduction of a conscience clause to enhance equality legislation in Northern Ireland.

A public consultation on his proposals will be launched within weeks.

“Following the public interest and controversy surrounding a Christian owned business wanting to observe their sincerely held religious beliefs I have been examining the legislation and whilst I trust the Courts will find against the actions taken by the Equality Commission I believe clarity can be provided to the legislation that upholds the type of society I believe the vast majority of people want which is one of tolerance that can respect people and organisations of faith,” said Mr Givan.

“A liberal democracy is one that recognises difference and makes reasonable accommodation for its citizens.

“I will be taking forward this initiative in the spirit for which it is intended to seek genuine equality that upholds the values enshrined in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.

“This right has long been recognised in modern civilised societies but is now being undermined in Northern Ireland by the actions taken against Ashers Bakery.”
