He said: “Council clean up crews removed discarded shopping trolleys as well as other debris such as old children’s push chairs.

“This will come as very welcome news for many people in the borough especially families who use this excellent public park on a regular basis.

“The level of rubbish discarded in the waterways which feed the lakes had reached a disgraceful level and was destroying the beautiful scenery in this area of the Lakes.

“I would urge people to be alert and mindful of people illegally dumping rubbish in the Lakes and their tributaries and to alert Council or the PSNI should they encounter people doing this.

“The Lakes are a space shared by everyone in the Borough and should be looked after and cared for to the highest standard to ensure enjoyment for all.”

A spokesperson for ABC Council said the clean up included the removal of shopping trolleys etc: “The waterways around the Lakes will be continually monitored and rubbish and debris will be removed as and when is required.”
