The branch was formed in 1954 when Mrs. Thornton, wife of the Rev. Thornton, held the opening meeting on September 21 1954 with Mrs McElhinney as the speaker.

However, research into the history of Lambeg Parish has revealed that a fledgling branch had begun in 1910. This branch was initiated by Mrs Banks, wife of Chancellor Banks, with Mrs Barbour as President. However, World War One and the death of Mrs Banks unfortunately brought the demise of this early branch in 1919.

Enrolling Member Mrs Rosalind Bloomfield said: “On our Diamond Anniversary, we have looked back but we must also look forward. The ladies who have helped to bring this branch through all the 60 years are recalled and remembered fondly and with all our members today we look forward to many more years of service and fun in our great branch of Lambeg Mothers’ Union.”

The Diamond celebrations commenced with a dinner in Robbie Cahoon’s restaurant with special guests Mrs Phyllis Grothier, the All-Ireland Mothers’ Union President, The Connor Diocese Mothers’ Union President Mrs Valerie Ash and the Derriaghy Area Chair Mrs Lyn Cassidy. After dinner Mrs Rosalind Bloomfield gave a short history of significant events in the 60 year life of the branch, whilst the after dinner entertainment was provided by distinguished local soprano Maeve Falconer accompanied by her husband David.

On the Sunday evening the special guests attended a Mothers’ Union Membership service with the sermon delivered by Mrs Phyllis Grothier. Three ladies were enrolled, Miss Edna Downing, Mrs Isobel Lee and Miss Helen Wilson. The service was followed by supper in the Church hall. Several young members cut the celebration cake which was baked by Mrs Joan Mairs. After supper Mrs Grothier presented several members with long service certificates. Mrs Ash presented a basket of flowers to each past enrolling member including, Mrs Eleanor Law, Mrs Dorothy McReynolds, Mrs Myrtle Morrison, Mrs Molly Craig and Mrs Laurie Lowry.

The Mothers’ Union promotes and supports Christian Family life, and contrary to what its name suggests it is a Charity open to all, male and female regardless of age or marital status. The members demonstrate their faith by putting it into action.
