Landfilled 30k tonnes of waste

DERRY City Council landfilled 30,962 tonnes of waste in 2008/9.

Local authorities are permitted to landfill Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW) under the Waste and Emissions Trading Act 2003.

The Council's allowance for last year was 39,397 tonnes and the volume of waste disposed of to landfill was 30,962 tonnes.

If the Council had exceeded the allowance it would have been liable for 150 per tonne of exceeded allowance.

In an Annual Audit Letter to the Council, Local Government Auditor Alfred Knox noted: "While there is some provision for the re-allocation of allowances, the Council needs to give careful consideration as to the risk of incurring penalties under the scheme."
