Language courses for migrant workers

A SECOND phase of these language classes for migrant workers is being rolled out in Londonderry.

The Language and Local Orientation project is funded through the District Council’s Community Relations Programme, and will begin on May 8.

Mayor Paul Fleming has given his backing to the course. He said: “I am delighted to see such practical initiatives and partnerships working with ethnic minorities and migrant workers here locally.

“Creating and sustaining positive relationships between all our communities is essential to not only individuals and communities, but also to the promotion of this city as a welcoming place for investors, businesses and the tourism industry.”

“We had an overwhelming response to the previous course in September 2009,” explained Eddie Kerr, Director of SEEDS. “We have now over 100 people from at least seven nationalities resident locally have applied for the 40 places available at this time.

“This is clear evidence of the relevance of this Community Relations initiative which will pass on valuable skills and knowledge to participants.”

“The Basic conversional course lasts for 10 weeks (30 hours) and is based in Foyle Language School in the One World Centre, Foyle Street,” added Sinead McCaul of Foyle Language School.

“These courses are delivered by highly qualified and experienced TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teachers and recognised by the British Council, so participants are assured of quality.”

“We are really pleased to be able to fund this initiative again for 2010,” stated Sue Divin, Community Relations Officer with Derry City Council.

“This is an opportunity for individuals to overcome communication barriers and enhance their awareness of local history and culture so that they can relate to the communities that they live in.”
