Largy vintage car rally

CAN you remember what a Morris Minor Pick-up looked like in a garage showroom back in 1968?

Well you can have an opportunity of seeing one in mint condition at Largy Vintage Rally and Fun Day this Saturday, May 29.

Retired Ballykelly businessman Billy Nicholl will have his fully restored Minor pick-up among the many vehicles on show.

Although he has had the Minor for some years he carried out a complete restoration and the vehicle is making its first outings this year.

Billy will have several other vehicles on show including a 1936 Austin 18 York.

His interest in vintage vehicles extends over 30 years when he purchased his first – a 1600 E Ford Cortina in Omagh. Since then he has added to his collection, which includes Land Rovers, tractors and motor cycles and ,of course, about a dozen cars of varying makes and models. "Since I started I have only sold one car and a motor cycle, all the rest I have retained", said Billy, whose current project is the restoration of a 1952 MG Saloon.

Also expected among the vintage vehicles on Saturday will be a Steam Traction engine and a threshing mill.

This will give the younger generation an opportunity of seeing how the corn was threshed in a bygone age. Of course, it will allow the older generation relive those days of yesteryear.

To make it even more authentic there will be horses there to draw the corn in a cart to the mill and then take the straw and grain to the barn. The display will including tractors, cars, vans and even lorries. There will also be a display of old cycles and a Fairground organ will also be in action. The event will be held in the field beside Largy Presbyterian Church outside Limavady and admission is 4 for adults with free admission for children. There will be other attractions such as football, bouncy castle to use up the energy of the children. In the hall beside the field there will be teas, cake stall, ice cream, plants etc

This event proved a great success last year despite continuous heavy rain and judging by the response of exhibitors it will be another big event.
