Larne Choral Society brings festive cheer to Whitehead

There was a warm welcome at Whitehead Methodist Church, which was hosting a concert in aid of the church hall building fund.

The evening concert was sponsored by The Village Butchers in Ballycarry.

Larne Choral Society, with musical director Elaine Hawthorne and accompanist Gwen Dick, provided the musical entertainment with pieces including ‘Hurry, shepherds, run’,‘Always believe’ and, in the weekof the memorial and funeral of South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela ‘I have a dream’.

The second half of the programme finished with the call to ‘Bring a little Jingle’ which matched the cheer brought to the event by the magnificent Christmas tree on the main stage.

Robert Ferris, organist for the traditional carols, also gave readings, one of which gave a nod to the weather warning for the weekend, The event was opened with a welcome from Rev. Gary Millar who also gave a second half reading fully kilted. His sketch of an appropriate gift for Christmas, when all exclusions for social and new cultural, eco, ‘ealf andsafety’ and politically correct considerations left only ‘Peace on earth’, was very funny, as well as appropriate.

Two highlights of the musical programme turned the spotlight on the younger generation and talented instrumental soloists in their own right. David Hawthorne, a versatile percussionist, entertained the audience with xylophone pieces, and the silken silver sounds of Hannah Copes’s cornet solos were a delight for everybody’s ears.

Whitehead Methodist Church members have thanked everyone involved in supporting the concert which will assist them in providing opportunities to reach out to their community.
