Larne Council’s £1m loan call for pay-offs

Larne Borough Council is to apply for a loan of up to £1m to pay for severance packages for two senior officers.

The two employees have applied for voluntary redundancy as the council prepares to wind up on March 31, when it will be replaced by Mid and East Antrim Council.

Chief Executive of the new body, Anne Donaghy has confirmed that the two posts in question will no longer exist under Mid and East Antrim Council’s structure.

At the latest meeting of Larne Council’s policy and resources committee, members were presented with the business cases for the two posts and advised on the costs in each case.

As the full cost of implementing the severance scheme is unknown, it was agreed that the council should make an application for the ‘in principle’ sum of £1m maximum, to be drawn down as and when required until March 31.

The cases must also be approved by Mid and East Antrim Council and the Department of the Environment.
