Larne girls earn Army stripes

LARNE students were among those who descended on Ballykinlar Army Training Centre last month to fight it out for the Army's Public Services Competition 2010.

Suzanna and Cara Marshall joined fellow students from the South Eastern Regional College, Southern Regional College and Belfast Metropolitan College for the contest.

Teams from each college competed in a series of military activities, such as the obstacle course, command and leadership tasks, clay pigeon shooting and map reading and observation tasks.

All of the students who participated in the competition attend a BTEC National Diploma in Public Services (Uniformed), which leads to a number of public sector occupations including the Armed Services.

Major Jon Kay, an Army Careers advisor, based in Palace Barracks Holywood, says; “This event was about generating competition between the three colleges, promoting the Public Services Course and exposing young men and women to young soldiers. In addition to this they got a genuine slice of Army life.”

Suzanna, a student at Belfast Metropolitan College, described the day as “great fun”

“During my course I’ve been learning about the different public sector organisations and their equipment. I’ve been able to see those organisations in action and I was able to put into practice some of what we’ve learnt over the last eight months.
