Larne High pupils help to launch World War 2 booklet

Aimed specifically at pupils at Key Stage 2 level, and community groups, Blitz, Bombs and Bullets utilises facts from a seminal period in British and European history, as well as highlighting previously unpublished and new material.

The interactive booklet outlines the many Orange connections, and the service and sacrifice of members, during the Second World War. It also unearths many interesting stories from the archives, including the placement of Belgian troops in Northern Ireland, German plans to invade the Province and the impact of the Belfast Blitz among others.

Appropriately, the workbook was formally launched on Armistice Day, in the company of the Larne High pupils, at the Museum of Orange Heritage in Belfast.

Museum curator Dr Jonathan Mattison said: “This book aims to provide an informed and educational resource for schools and will highlight the many varied aspects of the Second World War, including Orange Order service during the years of conflict.

“We hope the workbook will form a basis of learning in many classrooms across the Province as the Institution continues its community outreach.”

The initiative is the latest in a series of educational resources developed by the Grand Orange of Ireland and the Museum of Orange Heritage. A similar workbook based on the First World War, called Tanks, Trenches and Troops, was launched earlier this year. Another schools’ book focuses on the Paymaster General’s Book of Accounts and covers the Williamite wars.

All of the publications were part part-funded by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
