Larne High School celebrates its success in record year for results

Larne High School Principal John Armstrong has paid tribute to pupils, teachers and parents at this year’s prize giving event.

During his annual report, Mr Armstrong outlined some of the major academic successes of the past 12 months, with pupils achieving the best exam results in the school’s 57-year history.

He added: “We have worked extremely hard over these last few years to help our pupils raise their performance and achieve success. The pupils, supported by their parents, have worked with us and this year’s results have brought all that effort to fruition.

“We have exceeded every target we set ourselves. We have increased our percentages against every Department of Education benchmark by over 100 per cent for our GCSE and equivalent exams compared to last year.

“Our A Level pupils also achieved a 100 per cent pass rate for two or more A to E and 87 per cent for three or more A to E. What is even more remarkable is the fact that almost one third of the out-going cohort started Larne High School with some degree of special need.

“I want to congratulate every single pupil and every single member of our staff for achieving the best results in our school’s history.”

Mr Armstrong spoke of his pride at the pupils’ achievements and felt the school should celebrate its “uniqueness”.

“We’re not a Grammar School. For too many years secondary schools, like ours, tried to copy the grammar model, especially in terms of curriculum. We need to recognise our own worth and be comfortable in our own skin. Our curriculum and ethos now match the skills and attributes of our pupils and their wide breadth of talent. Their outstanding achievements now bear testament to that,” he added.
