Larne man honoured for 22 years' service with Army Cadet Force

A Larne man who served with the Army Cadet Force for 22 years has been honoured at a formal ceremony at Hillsborough Castle.

John Johnston was presented with the prestigious Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate for Outstanding Meritorious Service Above and Beyond the Call of Duty, one of the highest accolades that can be conferred on members of the Reserve Forces and Cadet movements.

Sergeant Major Instructor Johnston initially served as a Detachment Instructor, then Detachment Commander in Ballyclare before moving to his present roles as Detachment Commander of Larne Detachment Army Cadet Force and Company Shooting Officer for both his company and battalion.

SMI Johnston’s passion is shooting, and he is a vastly experienced and inspiring shooting coach, helping young people to achieve success in local and national competitions.

Described as a “highly qualified and dedicated adult instructor who is well respected by cadets and fellow adult instructors alike,” SMI Johnston is praised in his award citation for always being prepared to go “above and beyond the call of duty.”

The citation concludes: ‘SMI John Johnston has served over 28 years in the ACF as a cadet and an adult instructor.

“He is extremely loyal and dedicated, always willing to volunteer his services when required.

“He is thoroughly deserving of recognition.”
