Larne people urged to speak up on organ donation

Larne people are being urged to support a ‘Speak up and Save a Life’ campaign by discussing their organ donation wishes with their loved ones.

The Public Health Agency initiative is aimed at raising awareness of organ donation in Northern Ireland. Recent figures show that just 31 per cent of the Northern Ireland population are on the organ donation register.

In the Larne Borough Council area, 32 per cent of the population are on the organ donation register. Organ Donation Specialist Nurse with the Northern Trust Mary McAfee said: “It is encouraging to see so many people in Larne Borough Council area already on the register. However, we need more people to get behind this campaign. In Northern Ireland, almost 200 people are currently waiting for a transplant and sadly the chance will come too late for many.” For more information visit www.organdonationni.info
