Larne railway bridge repairs

DUE to essential bridge engineering work, Translink NI Railways are advising passengers that the railway line between Carrickfergus and Larne will be closed on Saturday, June 12 and Sunday 13. A bus substitution service will be put in place.

The bridge at North Road, Carrickfergus, has a low-headroom warning sign, however it has been struck a number of times by road users. Translink say that damage to railway bridges caused by strikes can have serious consequences and safety implications for train passengers, as well as cause significant delays to train services and other road users.

This work will help to strengthen the bridge and improve the overall safety for rail users. It will also mean reduced delays to train services following another bridge strike at North Road.

During the weekend closure, Translink will also take the opportunity to carry out some additional engineering work beyond Carrickfergus to improve the quality of the line in preparation for the new trains arriving in 2011.

Some of the works will need to be carried out at night; however noise will be kept to a minimum.

Translink have apologised for any inconvenience caused and advise passengers to allow extra time for their journeys.

Full details of timetables are available on line at www.translink.co.uk or passengers can call the contact centre on 02890 666630.
