Rifleman John “Neiller” McNeill - who served with the 12th battalion Royal Irish Rifles - was showcased at the event in the Belfast Waterfront at the weekend.

ABF The Soldier’s Charity, which supports soldiers, veterans and army families, picked the Somme veteran, who died in 1967, to headline throughout their commemoration concert.

The former Castle Street resident’s son, David McNeill, was also in attendance at the concert and received a standing ovation from the 1300 strong audience for his fundraising efforts.

Charity director, David Forsey said: “I think it was very appropriate to bring in the experiences of a real Somme soldier into our show and I’m very grateful to his son David, for helping us to do so.”
