Larne woman to learn about law ‘Down Under’

Amanda Wood is one of 150 people to win a Travelling Fellowship as the The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust marked its fiftieth anniversary.

Amanda, who is a manager working within the criminal justice sector, says that the focus of her project will be to learn about community involvement within the criminal justice system, concentrating on how strong community and cultural awareness and involvement can influence offenders to desist from criminal behaviour.

She commented: “I am absolutely delighted to have been awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to travel to Australia and New Zealand for five weeks, especially as this is the fiftieth anniversary of the Trusts conception.

“I feel we can learn from the indigenous people in Australia and New Zealand how to influence and change how we manage sections of our community who are over-represented throughout the criminal justice system.

“This will be an incredible personal development experience for me, getting the opportunity to travel to Australia and New Zealand where restorative processes have been embedded over the past several decades.

“The learning I gain will be used to develop new and fresh initiatives at a local and strategic level within the wider criminal justice system,” she concluded. For more information visit www.wcmt.org.uk.
