LASER DANGER

CHILDREN are playing a dangerous game with laser pens near the town's railway lines.

Police have received several reports of the pens being shone at airplanes and trains in the area.

It has prompted the local police commander to issue a no nonsense warning over the activities.

On Thursday, October 7, two reports were received of lasers being shone at aeroplanes and on Friday, October 8, a report was received of a laser being shone at a train in the Lake Street area. Area Commander Chief Inspector Jason Murphy said: ""Not only is it an offence under the Air Navigation Order to endanger aircraft but it is highly irresponsible and dangerous.

"Lasers can cause temporary blindness, which, where pilots or train drivers are concerned, can spell catastrophe.

"Anyone who foolishly believes that this is in some way entertaining or a fun way to pass time should take stock of their actions and realise that they are putting people's lives in danger.

"'I would ask young people to think about what they are doing. One simple act of foolishness could lead to a criminal conviction.

"I have asked my officers to take a robust approach to anyone found to be misusing laser pens and would also ask parents to warn their children of the dangers of this type of activity and the consequences they could face if they take part.

"We would ask anyone who has information in relation to this type of activity to contact police on 0845 600 8000."
