LATEST: Homes still without power after ice storm

About 25,000 homes remain without power this morning, after an ice-storm knocked out parts of Northern Ireland's electricity network.

Northern Ireland Electricity said engineers managed to restore power to 5,000 homes last night (Wednesday).

Up to 100,000 people were affected by power cuts on Tuesday and Wednesday, with hundreds of faults still waiting to be fixed.

NIE said it could be days before full power supply was restored.

Sara McClintock of NIE said conditions on the ground "remained difficult".

"Over 120 additional engineers and linesmen are arriving this morning from the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain.

"All available resources, whether people or equipment, are being deployed but there are still hundreds of faults on the network which need to be repaired - many of which are complicated and will involve replacing poles and restringing lines."

The worst hit areas for power cuts are currently Omagh, Londonderry, Coleraine and Ballymoney.
