LATEST: Police release 28-year-old arrested in Dungannon over Newry shootings

The 26-year-old, however is still in police custody.

Detective Inspector David Henderson said: “The 28-year-old man arrested by Detectives in Newry investigating two shooting incidents in the Newry area in the early hours of yesterday morning, Thursday, 17 September has been released on bail pending further police enquiries.

“A 26 year old man who had also been arrested remains in custody.”

The men were arrested by police in Dungannon after they were pulled over in a blue Volkwagen Passat.

They were taken into custody for questioning on charges of kidnapping, attempted murder and possession fo a firearm.

Two men, aged 32, were treated in hospital after being shot in the leg in two separate incidents that “may be linked”.

A police spokesperson said: “A blue Volkswagen Passat car was stopped by police in Dungannon earlier today [Thursday] and two men were subsequently arrested.

“A 28-year-old man and 26-year-old man were arrested for kidnapping, attempted murder and possession of a firearm.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Commander, Superintendent Simon Walls said: “We believe the incidents, which occurred in Sandys Street and Armagh Road in Newry, may be linked.

“We would like to hear from anyone who has information which may assist our investigation. Detectives in Newry can be contacted on 101, quoting ref: 46 170915.”
