LATEST: Police release 57-year-old arrested after man was shot in Cookstown

The 57-year-old arrested after a 33-year-old man was shoot in the Queens Avenue of Cookstown in the early hours of Saturday morning, has been released without charge.

The man, who is now on police bail, is helping the PSNI with its enquiries.

A police spokesperson also said that Wednesday night’s shooting in the Stewart Avenue area of town is not thought to be linked at this time.

But the police service is continuing its call for witnesses to come forward.

Just after 3.25am on Saturday, police received a report that a 33-year-old man had been shot in his left foot. He was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Detective Inspector Will Tate said: “Police attended and a car and suspected firearm have been recovered.

“Anyone who witnessed this incident, or who has any information about it, is asked to contact detectives at Cookstown Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Earlier in the week a man in his fifties was targeted in a gun attack on a home in Stewart Avenue.

The motive for the attack is still under investigation.
