Latest: Tractor driver killed on Moneymore dual carriageway in his 60s

Police have said the tractor driver killed in this morning’s accident on the Cookstown to Moneymore dual carriageway accident was in his 60s.

His vehicle is said to have collided with a blue Honda 4x4, the driver of which has been taken to hospital for treatment.

His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “The man was the driver of a tractor involved in a collision with a blue Honda 4x4 on the Moneymore-bound carriageway at approximately 9.30am.

“The male driver of the Honda was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

“Inspector Keith Hicks is appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact local Police in Cookstown or the Collision Investigation Unit in Steeple Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

“The dual carriageway remains closed.”

It is thought the man was on his way to a vintage tractor rally, which has now been cancelled.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service [NIFRS] were also called to the scene.

A NIFRS spokesperson said: “Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 9:36am to a report of a two vehicle road traffic collision at the Moneymore Road area of Cookstown this morning [Friday July, 17].

“One Fire Appliance from Cookstown Fire Station and one fire appliance from Magherafelt Fire Station were deployed to the scene. The incident involved a car and tractor with a trailer attached.

“Tragically, one man believed to be the driver of the tractor was fatally injured during the incident. Another man, believed to be the driver of the car was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries.

“The incident finished at 10:49am and has been passed through to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.”
