Laurelhill lady is 100 years young

Zoe who lives alone at her Laurelhill home and was celebrating her 100th birthday on January 26 was happy to chat about other topics like the Queen’s birthday parties but remained tight lipped about how she reached the grand old age of 100.

Zoe was born the same year that Alexander Bell made his first long distance call, the First Womens Institute was formed in Wales and the one millionth Ford car rolled off the assembly line.

Among the other visitors who called to Zoe’s home in Lisburn were the rector of Christ Church the Rev Paul Dundas, and members of Christ Church Mothers’ Union, including Diocesan President Valerie Ash. Zoe has been a member of Christ Church MU since 1986.

Her husband was the late Frederick Holman, and Zoe has a son who lives in Engand and a daughter who lives in Canada.

Rt Rev Alan Abernethy, said of of Mrs Holman, “Zoe is a delightful lady with a positive outlook on life, a twinkle in her eye and great sense of fun.

“I first met Zoe when I was in Christ Church, Lisburn, for Holy Week last year and was staggered to realise she was 99. I promised to return to see her on her birthday and she remembered that promise.

“It is a joy to meet people like Zoe who have lived a full life and remain so faithful and gracious.”

Valerie Christy, secretary of the Christ Church, Lisburn, branch of the Mothers’ Union, has known Zoe since she joined the MU.

“She is a loyal member and always attended meetings and took part in everything that was happening,” she said. ”She has been an indoor member for a number of years.

“For 100 years of age Zoe is amazing. She speaks her mind. She is very lively and brilliant to talk to because she is so interesting and full of lots of stories.”

Connor Diocesan President Valerie Ash, said Zoe was the oldest MU member in the diocese.

“It is great to have people who are this age and still interested in and support the MU,” Valerie said. “Indoor members are valued because every member has a part to play.”
