Laurie’s catwalk fundraiser is a big hit

A HILLSBOROUGH student has held a fashion show at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club to raise funds for a world challenge expedition to Thailand next year.

Laurie Stewart, who goes to Hunterhouse College, signed up three boutiques - Candy Plum, Catwalk Kids and Petticoat Lane Bridal - for the event which was attended by over 120 people.

World Challenge is a schools expedition company which offers a range of expedition programmes focused 100% on the education of young people, stretching comfort zones and expanding minds outside the classroom.

“At my school I have been selected onto a team of 18 girls to go to Thailand for three weeks with World Challenge” Laurie explained.

“From the moment we depart from Belfast every day we each will be responsible for a different aspect of the organisation of our trip, so say for example one day I could be in charge of the team’s transport, another day I could be responsible for the provision and potentially cooking of all the food and maybe another day what hammock and basher we sleep in.

“During our time in Thailand we will be carrying out several worthwhile projects with the local people doing work such as helping teach English, helping paint and decorate class rooms or church halls and generally being of help to the communities living in the remote areas of Thailand.

“I’m told that these trips are life changing and whilst they’re not a holiday we can achieve much self fulfilment through helping others.

Laurie thanked everyone who had made her fundraiser such a success.
