Leading Ladies programme explores the peace building role of women

The Leading Ladies Programme is being delivered by Newtownabbey Borough Council on behalf of the CAN Peace III Partnership and is funded by the European Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (Peace III) which is managed by the Special European Union Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The speakers at the first event were the Baroness Nuala O’Loan and Deputy Chief Constable Judith Gillespie OBE. Both ladies were candid as they shared with the audience their personal and professional perspectives on the important role women play in families, communities and professionally.

The aim of the programme is to bring local women into contact with perspectives which they may not have heard before, particularly in a peace-building context. In a series of events over the next 18 months, it will provide the opportunity to discuss the experiences of a range of inspirational women.

Speaking about the Leading Ladies Programme, Majella McAlister, Director of Development Services at Newtownabbey Borough Council said: “Through this programme we want to engage a spectrum of women in discussion on a range of challenging topics from a ‘real life’ perspective. The events will enable local women to hear the experiences of high profile ladies for whom peace has brought both challenge and opportunity.”
