Leak from boiler posed no harm, say Tesco

TESCO has moved to reassure customers at its Northcott store in Glengormley that an oil leak from the shop's boiler did not pose any harm to them or to staff.

A member of the public contacted the Times this week claiming that he was forced to abandon the store after going there to do his weekly shop.

“I had to leave without doing my weekly shopping because of the smell of oil fumes,” the man said.

“Upon asking a member of staff, I was told there was a leak at the boiler and the fumes were getting into the ventilation and apparently this has been going on all week.

“I understand things like a leak are an unexpected inconvenience, but waitiing over a week to get it fixed is ridiculous.

“I am just passing this on as I don't think it is acceptable that we are expected to shop while inhaling what could be dangerous fumes. I assume it is worse for staff who must remain in the store for long periods of time.”

A spokesperson for Tesco Stores Limited said: "We did have a small leak last Wednesday.

“The store was closed for a short period of time as a precautionary measure, while the fire brigade investigated and confirmed that no harm was posed to staff or customers. Our engineers had the problem resolved very quickly."
