LegenDerry Maritime Festival a smash hit

Tens of thousands of people flooded into Londonderry over the past nine days for the action-packed programme of maritime-themed activities centring round the River Foyle.

The highlight of the Maritime Festival was the welcoming of the 12-strong fleet of Clipper Race yachts which made their second stopover visit to the city, following a gruelling journey across the Atlantic.

Thousands thronged the Quayside to welcome home the victorious Derry-Londonderry-Doire crew who won the hard fought battle for first position, and the celebrations continued for a full week before the fleet bade farewell to the city and set sail for Den Helder in the Netherlands on Sunday.

Mayor Brenda Stevenson, was among those at Greencastle to watch a death-defying aerial display by the Red Arrows, marking the start of the 15th race in the round the world adventure for the hardworking crews.

“It was such an emotional day yesterday seeing off the Clipper Race crews who have really made the city their home for the past week,” she said.

“The LegenDerry Maritime Festival has been the highlight of the year for Derry, and I am so proud today that once again we have shone on the international stage.”
