Lesbian support group meeting weekly in Coleraine

LESBIAN women across the Coleraine borough are finding comfort and support in each other’s experiences at a local support group.

Facilitated by the Lesbian Advocacy Services Initiative (LASI), a regional charitable organisation that works to alleviate discrimination against lesbian and bisexual women, a peer group has been set up in Coleraine so that lesbian women and their families can both offer and receive support from each other and socialize together in a healthy and safe environment.

As well as being a safe haven for lesbian women to meet and share experiences the Coleraine group also acts as a platform for the fight against discrimination. Women discuss issues, plan contact with local politicians and raise awareness in the area.

LASI says it is currently working to develop the local support groups while also running various courses that are targeted at lesbian and bisexual women, including: City and Guilds accredited horticulture courses, LGB history courses, drama and theatre groups, intergenerational projects, and film nights etc.

LASI also offers a range of bespoke training on sexual orientation awareness for community and voluntary sector organizations and groups, as well as for statutory agencies.

The Coleraine group meets on the first Wednesday of each month. To find out the venue for the meeting or if would like to join the group or find out more, please contact the LASI development worker, Orlaith Hendron at [email protected] or 07597879630.
