Let your coloursexplode at Fireworks Dance and Drama Theatre Academy

DANCE student turned tutor Nadine Hegarty really is putting her best foot forward during the City of Culture year, by opening a new dance and drama academy studio.

The Fireworks Dance and Drama Theatre Academy has opened at Bishop Street (next to Hendersons Music) but what sets this studio apart from other dance and drama schools is that in addition to learning the basic disciplines, workshops and tutorial content is entirely student-led, making learning a fluid, fun experience.

A former student at Lumen Christi College, she was involved in dance and drama in school and Nadine then went to Essex University to study musical theatre, but her love of drama and dance has been a life-long affair. In fact, Nadine began studying the disciplines when she was just three, and in addition to her more formal studies spent seven summers in her teen years making the most of summer school scholarships to study ballet at San Jose Ballet School in California and the San Francisco Ballet School.

In a gap year after Essex University, adventurous Nadine packed her bags and headed off to India where she worked for six months with children with special needs. While there she also worked as a dancer.

At home, in addition to her studies Nadine has been an avid participant in Panto and two years ago she decided to return to study, enrolling with the Ulster University in Coleraine, where she is studying for an honours degree in English literature and education.

She will add this to her MiDAI (Midlands Dance Association International) qualification which she studied under the tutelage of Vanessa Chapman, Eglinton, and the experience she gained at the Foyle School of Speech and Drama at the Millennium Forum where she graduated with a Royal Irish Academy of Music and Drama Syllabus at Grade 8.

Enthusiastic about her new dance school, Nadine said: “I have been involved in theatre and dance since the age of three. I am really passionate about changing education through arts and culture here and I won’t be teaching to a syllabus . My work will be about workshops and creative learning with participants being involved in the process. It will be about expression through the disciplines, and I am promoting that in a safe, creative environment,” she said.

“It is not about me teaching to a syllabus. While students will learn the core disciplines, the learning environment I am promoting is one of freedom of expression with students leading the learning process.”

In addition to Nadine as artistic director, students will also benefit from input from industry professionals in various disciplines including producers and directors, who will share their expertise on making a career in the artistic and creative industries.

With classes for all ages from ‘Baby Ballet’ to an over 50s ballet for fitness, students at Fireworks Dance and Drama Theatre Academy can learn a wide range of disciplines including ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap, cheerleading, commercial dance, hip hop, body percussion, drama and musical theatre.

The studio os open for workshops from 3pm to 9pm nightly and all day on Saturday.
