‘Let’s celebrate the Jubilee’

A GARVAGH councillor has called on Coleraine Council to set aside a sum of money for celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this year.

The Queen came to the throne on 6th February 1952 and Buckingham Palace co-ordinating the events of the Diamond Jubilee central weekend (2nd–5th June).

However, Cllr Adrian McQuillan has asked Council to make money available to communities who wish to mark the milestone with some celebrations.

Council’s David Jackson told a meeting of Council’s Policy and Development Committee on Tuesday that he had been liaising with the Lord Lieutenant for County Antrim regarding celebrations.

He said that initial suggestions included a tattoo and lighting beacons across the county.

He said said that he would bring a report back to Council next month and added that the Jubilee celebrations will coincide with the arrival of the Olympic torch on June 3rd and 4th as well as the Public Holiday and the Irish Open.
