Let's spell it out folks .. St. Louis win at the Watefront

ST. LOUIS Grammar pupils made May 4 a red letter day when they scooped top prize at the Northern Ireland heat of the 2010 'Times' spelling bee competition at Belfast's Waterfront Hall.

More than 1000 schools from across the UK have entered a team for the competition and St Louis Grammar School beat seven teams drawn from schools across the province.

The St Louis team consisted of three players and a reserve – Hugh Dobbin (11), Emma Devlin (12), Sara Hillan (12) with Nicole Traynor (11) as a reserve.

The team showed off their mastery by successfully spelling words such as ‘judicious’ and ‘auditorium’.

And their teacher Mary McKinley was delighted their performance: “It was very exciting, especially when we were third in the first round and it was great to come back and win it!”

Emma Devlin, pupil said: “The months of training paid off! I feel ecstatic!”

In second place was Methodist College, from Belfast with Ballyclare High School coming third.

St Louis Grammar School will go forward to The Times Spelling Bee Semi-Finals in May. The ten winning teams from the Semi-Finals will then travel to London to compete in the Grand Final at The Institute of Education on 24 June.

The Times Spelling Bee aims to discover the country’s best young spellers and make spelling fun for children of all abilities and is one of a series of nationwide initiatives to help inspire children and support teachers.
