LFACA payment scheme welcomed - Cllr Chivers

SINN Féin Councillor Brenda Chivers has welcomed the recent announcement from her party colleague DARD Minister Michelle Gildernew that payments under the 2010 Less Favoured Area Compensatory Allowances Scheme (LFACA) have started to be issued.

Cllr Chivers said: "I know that these payments, worth some 25million, will be a welcome boost to farmers in disadvantaged areas. I also understand that the Department had hoped to start payments earlier in February but unfortunately were unable to do so until the necessary legislation was finalised and put in place."

"This short delay allowed DARD to process additional claims and it is expected to have 90% of eligible claims paid by the end of March. The remainder of claims will be paid progressively in the Spring once queries and probate issues have been resolved. To enable us to maximise the number of LFA payments during this period, farmers are asked not to phone Orchard House unless absolutely necessary. Where it is necessary to ring, callers should bear in mind that phone lines may be busy at peak periods." continued Cllr Chivers.

"I wish to commend my party colleague Minister Gildernew for prioritising this issue and doing all within her power to ensure payments are processed and paid to farmers working on less favourable land. It is they who often face the greatest challenges and these payments will alleviate some of the financial burden they face."
