Life of Anne Evelyn Logan (nee Millar)

Anne Evelyn Millar was born in Randalstown on 14th August 1937.

Her parents were Robert and Evelyn Millar (farmers).

Anne had two younger brothers – David & John.

She attended Primary School in Randalstown – her talents included playing the piano and singing. She was very successful in the local music festivals and regularly won awards.

She was a faithful member of Randalstown OC Presbyterian Church and attended Sunday School. When she left primary school she attended Ballymena Academy. Along with her academic classes, she enjoyed playing hockey and tennis.

She lost her father very suddenly when she was 15 years old. Her father was only 37 years old at the time of his death. This resulted in Anne supporting her mother in bringing up her younger brothers, the youngest was only weeks old at this time.

After leaving Ballymena Academy at the age of 18, she commenced her training in the nursing profession at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. She subsequently obtained her SRN and FRN qualifications. Anne also nursed in the Fever Hospital in Belfast.

Anne met William in Ballymoney in early 1963. She had a nursing friend from Ballymoney and they called into William’s electrical shop in Ballymoney. William was then employed to wire Anne’s friend’s house. Romance then blossomed and they married on 27th August 1965 in Randalstown OC Presbyterian Church. Unfortunately Anne’s mother passed away only two weeks prior to their wedding.

Anne and William honeymooned in Italy .They set up home at Lavin, Knockahollet and then Anne made contact with a respected surgeon in the old Coleraine hospital. She obtained a position in the old Coleraine hospital as the Night Sister.

Anne loved her involvement with the local community and over the next number of years she enjoyed being in Armoy WI, Ballyweaney Junior Boys Brigade and Ballyweaney PWA.

Anne and William’s first child Jayne was born in 1968. At this time she left her position with the old Coleraine Hospital to spend time raising her family. In 1970 Robert was born and then Naomi in 1974 and her family was complete. Anne, William and the family enjoyed many summer holidays in the Isle of Man at the TT races in subsequent years.

Over the next number of years Anne continued her involvement in the local community. She became president of Armoy WI and was also on the WI Executive Committee. She was secretary of the North Antrim Unionist Association and also involved in Knockahollet Primary School PTA.

Anne enjoyed many hobbies including baking, knitting and reading. She was successful in the various competitions within the WI and was well known for her talents.

In 1986 as her family was growing up Anne decided to return to her vocation as a nurse. She loved caring for people and the opportunity arose to re-commence this profession. She commenced work in Craigdun Private Nursing Home, Cullybackey as night sister. This was a role she really enjoyed and built many friendships during this time.

Anne also supported her husband William with his electrical business in Ballymoney and his work as a Councillor and Alderman in Ballymoney Borough Council. She was Mayoress of Ballymoney in 1999-2000 where she attended many civic events supporting William in his position as Mayor of

Ballymoney. This was a very special time for Anne and she enjoyed meeting many new people from many parts of the country. One special memory was the special occasion held in Ballymoney honouring the achievements of the late Joey Dunlop motorcyclist.

Anne retired from Craigdun Private Nursing Home in 2000. She enjoyed her retirement and loved the times William and her travelled to Enniskillen to visit their grandson Oliver.

Anne enjoyed the various classic car events which she and William attended as members of Ballymoney Old Vehicle Club. She made many friendships during these years.

Unfortunately Anne’s health deteriorated but despite this, she continued to attend Armoy WI and enjoyed the friendships she had built up over many years.

Anne bore her illness with great courage right up to her passing in the Causeway Hospital on 30th April 2016.

Her funeral service was held in Ballyweaney Presbyterian Church on 3rd May. The service was conducted by Rev Kenneth Henderson and the organist was Dorothy Orr.

William and the family took great comfort from the large number of friends and family who attended the service which was a tribute to this highly respected and much loved lady.

The choir at the service comprised many members of Armoy WI.

The family - William, Jayne and Kenny, Robert and Donna, Naomi, Michael and Oliver - would like to thank the following for all their love and support over the past number of days: Rev Kenneth Henderson, Doctors and nurses at the Causeway Hospital, Dr McCurdy and staff at the Frocess Medical Centre, DJM Robinson & Son – Funeral Directors, the Gage family, the wider family circle, friends and neighbours including members of all the various associations where Anne has enjoyed many happy times.
