Lifeline for Waterworld?

Members of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council agreed to keep the wet play facility open over the Easter holiday period at a meeting of Council on Tuesday night.

A recommendation had been put forward to close the facility by Council officers.

The debate about the harbour based facility, which first opened in 1986, was held behind closed doors, despite some objections by members, who felt that the issue should be discussed in public, because it was a ‘public interest story’.

However, The Coleraine Times understands that a proposal by DUP councillor Trevor Clarke for Council officers to bring a report exploring all options of the future of centre was carried.

As part of cllr Clarke’s proposal, the water slides at Coleraine Leisure Centre will be reinstated.

They were closed back in 2010 as a cost saving measure by Coleraine Borough Council.

As we revealed this week, falling visitor numbers and the need for repairs to the complex, has led Council officials to consider the future of the centre, which also includes a ten pin bowling facility.
