Lift off for the Portrush Air Show

THE organisers of the NI International Airshow in Portrush have started to formalise the line-up for the popular tourist event on Saturday and Sunday, September 4-5.

This is superb news for the 200,000 fans of the show following the announcement of its cancellation at the start of the year. A huge swell of public support along with the much-needed financial assistance from Coleraine Borough Chamber will see the show fly again.

Russian aerobatic aircraft will join classic super-sonic jets, and state-of-the-art front line fighters in a superb display of skill and speed scheduled over the two days.

The world famous Red Arrows will open the show and organisers are seeking to secure a full programme of exciting aircraft. Details have been released early of the inclusion in the show of a rare and noteworthy WW1 biplane, the Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a, the most successful of all First World War fighters. At Portrush the SE5a will be flown by Scot, Neil Geddes, who re-built the aircraft in 1980 and after it stood for many years on static display at the Strathallen Air Museum.

Paul Gallagher of the Events Team at Coleraine Borough Council, said; "It is a huge relief to many that the Airshow is back on track and we are all looking forward to a super busy weekend in September with a strong line up of air displays and ground acts on both days.

"Despite their training crash earlier this year the Red Arrows will return to the North Coast with all nine aircraft, as well as for the first time ever, with a female pilot. The programme is getting more and more impressive and we will shortly be releasing information of more superb aircraft and entertainment attractions."
