Great Lighthouses of Ireland is an EU Interreg Programme funded project, initiated by the Commissioner of Irish Lights (CIL).

The programme aims to facilitate greater public interpretation of the lighthouse and provide public access to the building.

Its close proximity to the Gobbins Path also opens up opportunities for creation of a coastal walking route, stretching an uninterrupted 3km from Whitehead to the Gobbins.

In a report presented at the Economic Growth and Development Committee, members were told that CIL had been working in partnership with the local authorities responsible for areas in which selected lighthouses are located, including the legacy Carrick Council.

CIL have now initiated a ‘brand partnership’ team and are inviting representation from key stakeholders, such as Mid and East Antrim Council.

Welcoming the proposal, committee chairperson Councillor Audrey Wales said: “I look forward to seeing how this evolves.”
