LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION:Mayor launches '˜Into Film' project

To explore the world of film as an educational tool, Into Film works with hundreds of schools and youth groups across Northern Ireland.

In addition to the festival screenings and film clubs, Into Film provide a host of free teaching resources, DVD’s, teacher training sessions and special events to enhance the curriculum and promote the use of film within education.

Through November’s free Into Film festival children, from age 5-19 years old, will have the opportunity to experience the wonder of film in the cinema. With its diverse programme of free screenings and events, the festival uses the power of film to captivate young minds and bring learning to life.

Festival screenings in the area include:

James and the Giant Peach – Stuck with his evil aunts, James creates a magical enormous peach. Befriending the charming insects inside, he attempts an escape;

Stick Man and Room on the Broom – Two of the most popular stories by children’s author Julia Donaldson are wonderfully brought to life in these animated adventures;

Eddie The Eagle – The life story of Michael (Eddie) Edwards, Britain’s first ski-jumper and his quest for Olympic glory.

Supporting more than 800 film clubs across Northern Ireland (9,000 in the UK), teachers can access a wealth of support and inspire pupils by bringing the magic of the movies into the classroom.

Launching the initiative, Mayor Alderman Maura Hickey said that her most memorable childhood film was “The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima” which she saw in the cinema circa 1957, aged 8 years old.
