Lignite 'prevents planning permission'

THE potential for a lignite mine in north Antrim - which has attracted vast public opposition - is preventing local people from getting planning permission.

J. Barlett wants a new farm dwelling and garage 50 metres south west of 6 Leitrim Road near Stranocum.

But planners have indicated a ‘refusal’ saying that if the development was permitted it would ‘prejudice the future exploitations of valuable lignite mineral reserves’.

And planners further state the development is contrary to the planning policies in the Northern Area Plan 2016 in that the site is ‘located within an area of proven lignite mineral reserves’.

The case is on a planning list which is due to come to a meeting of Ballymoney Council on September 20.
