Limavady businesses warned against fire bombs

BUSINESSES in Limavady have been told by police to check their premises throughout the day for fire and bomb devices, the Sentinel has learned.

Advice leaflets were sent to every retailer in the borough at the weekend warning managers to ensure staff are trained for spotting 'incendiary' devices. The leaflet, which landed on trader's doorsteps on Saturday, stated that businesses must ensure employees are vigilant and that "systematic" searches should be carried out at closing time, as well as "discreet" searches during working hours. The Limavady police leaflet, entitled: 'Incendiary attacks on business premises have occurred in the past. Have you let your guard down?' adds that staff should be cautious against suspicious behaviour. It reads: "Check your premises frequently throughout the working day and especially before closing.

"This should cover a systematic search at the end of each day's trading, and discreet searches during business hours in times of high risk."

"Incendiary devices are time controlled 'fire lighters'. Slightly larger than a cassette tape and will have batteries etc attached, they maybe wrapped in tissue paper or inside socks."

Limavady town representative Jack Rankin said the message was something he hoped call traders and retailers would take notice of coming up to Christmas.

"These kind of people do not care who they hurt. It could happen anywhere and I would appeal to all people in Limavady to take notice of the message being sent by police. Incendiary attacks on businesses here does happen. We all have to play our part.

"If anyone requires assistance with their security they should contact the Crime Prevention Officer in Limavady.
