Limavady man jailed for disorderly behaviour in Causeway Hospital

A judge said on Monday he was jailing a Limavady man for two months to “mark my disapproval” of his disorderly behaviour inside Coleraine’s Causeway Hospital.

District Judge Liam McNally was speaking at Coleraine Magistrates Court where Jordan Hazlett (20), of Linenhall Street, appearing via video link pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred on Sunday July 26 this year.

A prosecutor said the extremely intoxicated defendant had been brought to hospital by police after saying he needed help after making threats to kill himself but at the hospital he upset other patients by using abusive language.

A defence solicitor said any case involving a hospital is serious but that this was at the “lower end of the scale”.

Added the lawyer: “Earlier he had tried to take his own life.”

He added: “Staff should not have to put up with conduct like this. At the time he considered he needed treatment of the utmost urgency and he was told that would take some time.”

Judge McNally said the type of behaviour had to be met with a custodial sentence.
