Limavady Mayor thanks 'selfless' Lifeboat crew

LIMAVADY Borough Council have presented a cheque to the RNLI, in a tribute to lifeboat members who saved two Limavady boys last summer.

Reece Sufferin and Matthew Forsythe got trapped in caves near Castlerock for over five hours last year.

Crew member and mechanic, Anthony Chambers, braved the darkness and the dangerous conditions to reach the boys, and rescue them one at a time.

It took Anthony half an hour to compete the treacherous swim against the rising tide.

Last Wednesday, Mayor of Limavady Cathal hOisn presented the RNLI with a cheque in recognition of the bravery of Anthony and his crem colleagues.

Cllr hOisn said: "I am absolutely delighted to come here today and present a donation to such a worthy cause.

"The selfless actions of these men that day can not be over-estimated as without them, the consequences would have been incomprehensible.

"As a long time boat enthusiast, I have always appreciated, and taken comfort in the knowledge that each time you go to sea, the RNLI are never too far away and are always ready to help.

As a result of the rescue, Anthony Chambers has been awarded the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's (RNLI) Bronze Medal for Gallantry.

While Reece Sufferin has received a Commendation Award from the Boys Brigade for his selfless bravery during the incident, when he insisted his friend Matthew be rescued from the cave first.
