Lisburn actor Rea welcomes everyone to the ‘Cabaret’

Lisburn actor Rea Campbell is in final rehearsals for his latest role, Fritzie, in Bruiser Theatre’s upcoming production of ‘Cabaret’ at The Mac.

Rea, who has performed many times with local theatre companies Lisnagarvey Operatic and Fusion Theatre, auditioned for the show in April and was thrilled to land the part of Fritzie, one of the female ensemble.

“This is my first time with Bruiser and it has been a fantastic experience,” said Rea.

“When I was in London and was hearing the buzz about what was happening in Belfast, everyone was talking about the musicals Bruiser was staging at The Mac.

“They kind of capture the West End in Belfast and when I saw they were holding open auditions for Cabaret, I didn’t hesitate, I was straight in there.”

Rea is a fan of Cabaret and is familiar with the music of Kander and Ebb, having performed in another of their shows whilst at the London College of Music.

“I am familiar with the music and writing of Kander and Ebb,” explained Rea. “I think it captures the true musical theatre sound with a hint of jazz as well.”

Cabaret is known for its dark undertones, set against the backdrop of the rise of fascism and Bruiser capture this mood perfectly in their production.
“It has got a very sinister feel to it,” continued Rea. “But that is very relevant to what is going on outside the doors of the cabaret and the issues in 1935. The Cabaret is a place of escapism for the people who go there.”

Rea has found his latest role very challenging but is looking forward to the opening night on Tuesday September 16.

“I play one of the female ensemble and flit between genders,” continued Rea. “It is a very complex character and I have nine costume changes during the show. Having to learn how to dance in high heel shoes has been a challenge as well.

“Rehearsals have been going really well. Bruiser have such an efficient, straight to the point, way of rehearsing and the characters are really starting to come to life.

“I cannot wait until the opening night,” added Rea. “I don’t feel nervous yet but I’m sure I will on the night.”

‘Cabaret’ runs at The Mac in Belfast from Tuesday September 16 until Saturday October 4.

There are special ticket packages available for the show, including the ‘Sitting Pretty’ package, which allows you to sit cabaret-style in the midst of the recreated Kit Kat Club, and the ‘Perfectly Marvellous’ deal which includes an Absolut cocktail and a charcuterie board as well as premium tickets to the show.
