Lisburn artist donates poppy painting

A beautiful new painting of poppies has been donated to the Maternity Unit in the Ulster Hospital by Lisburn artist, Kerry Miles, whilst she was a patient in the maternity unit for over five weeks.

Kerry had completed a number of paintings while in hospital but her influence for this particular piece came when her husband, Darren and herself came across poppies growing in the hospital grounds.

As Kerry was pregnant with a girl, she decided she would name her Poppy.

This seemed like a perfect name for the couple and very fitting in the year that marks 100 years since the beginning of World War One.

Kerry wanted to give the staff something they could keep forever to express her gratitude towards them. Kerry was overwhelmed by the amazing care she received and to be away from home for so long while pregnant can be difficult, but Kerry believes the staff made it an easy experience.

She says she has made “true friends and lovely memories.”

Kerry recalls how the staff made her feel at home and went out of their way to make sure she was in a suitable environment to complete her paintings.

A selection of Kerry’s paintings will be displayed in her exhibition at Lisburn Island Arts Centre in October. The exhibition will preview on October 29 at 7.30pm and will go on until November 22.
