Lisburn branch of Parkinson’s UK takes well earned break

MEMBERS of the Lisburn Branch of Parkinson’s UK are taking a well-earned rest after a busy and successful season of activity during the first six months of 2012.

Speakers at the monthly meetings included representatives from Ulsterbus, David Fletcher of the Ulster Star and Jackie Harte who talked about the restoration of Castle Gardens.

During April the Branch participated in Parkinson’s awareness week. Some members took part in a fundraising stroll through the Stormont Estate and the Branch put an information stand on display in the Health Centre. A very successful coffee morning was organised by Jessie Herron and raised in excess of £1000 for the Branch. Two members, John Herron and Jim Henry featured in a Euro News television programme when they talked about their involvement in a research project at Queens University looking at how the Nintendo Wii might be adapted to benefit people who have Parkinson’s disease.

A series of country and western concerts were organised by Sam Pollock from Comber and raised £5475, all of this being earmarked to enable the branch to provide badly needed services for its members.

The first half of the year finished on a high note with a coach trip to Carlingford followed by dinner in the Millbrook Lodge Hotel, Ballynahinch.

The Branch meets at 2:30 pm on the third Monday of the month and further details may be obtained from the Secretary, Violet Swarbrigg on telephone 02892638952
