Lisburn city council hosts a reception for Dame Mary Peters

Lisburn City Council has congratulated Dame Mary Peters on her prestigious ‘Companions of Honour’ award from Her Majesty the Queen at a reception held recently at Lagan Valley Island.

The Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Andrew Ewing, described Dame Mary as an inspiration and a globally recognised sportswoman, an ambassador for Northern Ireland and held in the highest regard.

Dame Mary was awarded the MBE for ‘Services to Athletics’, the CBE in 1990 for ‘Services to Sport’ and the DBE in 2000 for ‘Services to Sport and the Community in Northern Ireland.’

The then Lisburn Borough Council bestowed its highest honour, the Freedom of the Borough, on Dame Mary in 1998.

Dame Mary became Lord Lieutenant for Belfast in 2009 and was also admitted as Freeman of Belfast City Council in 2012.

The Mayor welcomed Dame Mary to the reception held in her honour and said: “The rarely bestowed Companions of Honour award signifies how highly regarded Dame Mary is.

“We are absolutely delighted for our Freeman and are in admiration of Dame Mary’s talent, ability and accomplishments.”
