Libraries NI announced temporary changes to opening hours across Northern Ireland as it looks to make £1.4 million in savings by March, thanks to a 4.4% cut in its budget.

Changes come into effect on Monday and Lisburn Library will lose five hours, closing at 5pm on a Wednesday going forward instead of 10pm.

A spokesperson said: “Staffing levels in all libraries have been reviewed to ensure they remain open at busiest times and to prevent disruption to core services and programmes.

“Every effort will be made to adhere to the published temporary opening hours. However, temporary ad hoc closures or changes to opening hours may occur.

“Advance notice will be given where possible.”

Lagan Valley MLA Basil McCrea said it was fortunate Lisburn had suffered only a minor reduction in opening hours and he welcomed news that Moira Library would keep its current opening hours.
