Lisburn is hit by an art attack

Four of the city’s budding artists have been awarded for their flourishing talents at the 34th Annual Lisburn City Schools’ Arts Competition.

The competition is co-ordinated by Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee, in conjunction with ISLAND Arts Centre, and is open to children in all Lisburn schools from P3 upwards.

Outstanding Individual Awards were given out to Olivia Novaes from Friend’s School Lisburn (Visual Art), Julie Yeow from Wallace High School (Poetry), Luke Mulholland from St. Patrick’s Academy (Short Story) and Jamie Howe from Friends’ School Lisburn (Musical Performance). As well as individual awards, prizes were also given to schools that had the highest numbers of winning entries.

With a wide range of categories for visual art, short stories, poetry, drama, and musical performance, the competition once again highlighted the best of the talented young people in the area. Awards were presented by Councillor Alan Carlisle, Vice Chair of Lisburn City Council’s Leisure Services Committee and Ms Eileen Boylan, External Relations Manager, with Montupet UK Ltd, who are the main sponsor of the competition. Other sponsors included Waterstones and Music Matters, Lisburn.

Guests at the ceremony were treated to a range of performances and readings including musical items from Jamie Howe, Friends’ School Lisburn, readings from Olivia Baxter, Friends’ School Lisburn and Cora Diver, Oakwood Integrated Primary School and drama excerpts from Christ the Redeemer Primary School with their production ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and Meadow Bridge Primary School with their production ‘Kissing the Shuttle’.

Speaking at the award ceremony, LAAC Chairman Graham Catney called the young artists “thepride of the city.”

There will be an exhibition in the Community Arts Walkway until Monday 30 June and after that, the works will go on display in the Lisburn City Library from Tuesday 1 July to Saturday 9 August.
