Lisburn is supporting Community Relations Week

LISBURN is supporting Community Relations Week and its theme ‘Division – no quick fix’ with a Cultural Quiz.

The City Council is working with Beyond Skin which is organising the quiz which pits the local community against an international quiz team to discover how much local people know about their own culture. Representatives from different council departments will also be invited to participate.

The quiz will take place on Wednesday May 25, and further details are available from David Mitchell on 028 9250 9250.

It is part of Community Relations Week which runs from May 23 to May 28 and is organised by the Community Relations Council (CRC). The flagship event will be the CRC policy conference on Thursday May 26 at the Stormont Hotel Belfast, which will focus on the economic and social benefits of developing a shared society.

Addressing the cost of division Duncan Morrow, CRC chief executive said: “The legacy of hatred continues to impact on the life chances of our children, the quality of life we lead and the economy we can grow. We need action to change what we think of as normal.”

Welcoming Lisburn’s involvement he said: “The fact that people are organising events for Community Relations Week is a challenge to sectarianism and racism and offers the prospect that an open and shared society is more than a pious hope.”

A full listing of Community Relations Week events can be found at www.nicrc.org.uk and printed programmes can be obtained from local libraries.
