Lisburn man nominated for Princes Trust Award

Andrew (26) who has been nominated for the Trusts' Breakthrough Award, left school with little educataional achievement and had been unemployed for five years. Andrew now works as a full time support worker for Positive Futures in Lisburn.

Andrew never realised he had the skills and experience to get a job in the social care sector. He provides personal care and support for his twin brother who is severely disabled.

After an interview with The Princes Trust, Andrew was accepted onto the 'Get into Social Care' Programme. The training programme provided participants with support as well as training in the necessary skills and practical experience for social care work. Andrew's confidence grew throughout the programme and it was soon evident he had the ideal attitude for this type of work.

Andrew recently completed his Level 2 Learning Disability Qualification accredited by City and Guilds and was successful in securing a full time post in Positive Futures.

The annual Princes Trust awards recognise young people who have changed their lives through participation in one of the programmes.

The Trust's Breakthrough Award recognises the progress of young people in overcoming barriers and developing new skills.

The Prince's Trust works with 14 to 30 year-olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law. In Northern Ireland, over 3,000 young people each year are supported through practical help including training, mentoring and financial assistance.

Ian Jeffers, Director of The Prince's Trust, said: "The Celebrate Success Awards underline the positive contribution that young people can bring to our community."

The Awards Ceremony will be held in Newtonabbey's Theatre at the Mill on Thursday, November 25.
