Lisburn Memorials Trust gets Heritage Lottery support

This money will be used to help fund a scheme for the conservation of memorials commemorating Huguenot and Linen families located in the precincts of Christ Church Cathedral.

Initiated by members of Lisburn Historical Society and with the permission of Christ Church Cathedral, Lisburn Memorials Trust will carry out a project of conservation of three historic memorials commemorating the Crommelin, Dubourdieu and Coulson families who played a significant part in the introduction and development of the linen industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, making Lisburn the principal centre for the production of high quality linen in Ulster and Ireland and establishing Irish Linen as a brand worldwide.

The local community, schools and tourists visiting Lisburn will see many benefits when this project is complete, with improved access to the memorials, and new signage, seating and information boards which will enhance the public realm in this historical area of the city.

Commenting on the award the Chairman of Lisburn Memorials Trust, Mr Harvey Bicker said: “This is positive news from Heritage Lottery Fund and will allow us to make an early start with work to be completed by spring 2015.”

Using monies raised by the National Lottery, Heritage Lottery Fund aims to make a lasting difference for local heritage, people and communities across the UK and the North of Ireland, helping to build a resilient heritage economy.
