Lisburn people asked to help charity light up

Northern Ireland Hospice has launched its annual Lights to Remember appeal and fundraiser, Deirdre Melley, who works in Lisburn, is hoping local people will give their support.

The charity is hoping it will receive support from people in Lisburn who wish to remember their loved ones whilst supporting Hospice.

One of the most significant events in the charity’s calendar, the appeal’s target of £190,000 will help care for local adults living with terminal illnesses over the festive season and beyond.

Now entering its twentieth year, the ‘Lights to Remember’ appeal focuses on sponsoring a light on the Hospice Christmas tree in memory of a loved one, whether that’s a beloved child, mother, husband, close relative, or friend.

Whilst Christmas is a time filled with joy and celebration, unfortunately for many families it’s also a very difficult time. Lights to Remember allows families the chance to come together and share in the memory of that special person who is sadly no longer with us.

On Thursday December 18, following a short service at Dominican College, Fortwilliam, a torchlight procession will proceed to Somerton House, where the Christmas tree lights will officially be switched on.

“In Northern Ireland 1 in 3 people are touched by the care and support they receive from Hospice,” said Deirdre. “This is only made possible by the generosity of the public in supporting appeals such as Lights to Remember.

“This year many people will be spending the festive season missing a loved one. Sponsoring a light on the Hospice tree is a special way to remember them whilst helping to provide care to local adults living with a terminal illness. Every donation, big or small, to sponsor a light goes a long way. A donation of just £30 could help pay for an hour of Hospice care.” Northern Ireland Hospice cares for 3,000 adults with life-limiting illnesses and their families each year. Whilst Hospice care is free to the patient, it is not free to provide and the charity relies heavily on support and donations from the public.
